A partner and a friend of Listen up Mentor

Greetings to you all from the National Youth Ministry Weekend at Resorts World, Birmingham! My name is Heulwen, and I’m a partner of Listen Up Mentor. I’ve known Paul (the founder) for over six years, and I’m excited to be a part of this organisation. I know for many of you reading, this will be the first time you’ve heard from me, so I’ll spend time on this blog telling you little about me and then give you a brief reflection of the most recent resource.

Making and editing some of the resources for Listen Up Mentor feeds into my character because I’m naturally a creative person. I love hand lettering, cross-stitching, designing and most things in between! Originally from North Wales, I’m currently based, as a youth worker for a local church, just outside of Bristol. Between these two places, I spent five years in the Midlands training to be a professional youth worker (and it's in this time I met Paul!).

My faith as a Christian is an incredibly important aspect of my life; it has helped me navigate some of the most significant storms in my life and is the driving force behind my work with young people. The times I’m not at church or with family & friends I will almost definitely be on a couch (watching Netflix), in a coffee shop (reading [less likely] or working) or by the sea (watching the sunset – or the sunrise if I’m early enough!) And that’s me!

This month you will have seen that we’ve released a resource on courage. I found this quite challenging, to be honest. Not in the design, but in preparation for designing this resource. The fact that scared is a feeling, brave is an action; I mean – how amazing?! Reflecting on the fact that it’s okay to feel scared, but courage is doing it anyway. The question that asks what courage looks like to the child/young person is probably one of the most revealing questions you will ask them in this session, if not the series. It will reveal so much to you about them – if you let it. It starts a conversation. And ultimately, that’s what we – as mentors – are here for – we want to listen up.

As part of my role, I am keen to develop myself to be the best version of me I can be. Yes, for myself. But also for my young people. So I’ve come to the National Youth Ministry Weekend as part of this. Great resources, fantastic speakers are delivering engaging seminars & an enjoyable time catching up with friends near and far. Looking after yourself is so important. But I’ll leave that conversation to a future blog! If you’re curious in the meantime, please do get in touch: info@listenupmentor.org
